The 15 Meter tall Millennium Gate spans Pender street at the Western most entrance to Vancouver’s Chinatown. It is located just East of the Taylor Street / Pender Street intersection. The most traditional part of the Gates design are the two lions on the Western side of the gate. The two lions were placed to look over Chinatown.
This traditional gate was built with the intention to allow Chinatown to announce itself. To compliment the other unique attractions of historic Chinatown. “It is a gate for a new millennium that links with the past”. The Millennium Gate is a part of a larger scale plan to market Vancouver’s Chinatown. Its construction was also part of the process to improve business & living conditions throughout Vancouver’s Downtown neighborhoods. The Millennium Gate is also an integral part of the “Silk Road”, a historically details passage between Chinatown & Downtown Vancouver.
Funding for the Millennium Gate came from the city of Vancouver ($250,000), the Provincial Government ($200,000), the Federal Government ($250,000) and the Community ($160,000). Mean while the Chinatown Millennium Society had already raised ($20,000) in the community for the project.
