The Abacus is located just inside the Chinatown boarder of Crosstown Vancouver at 35 Keefer Place. This unique piece of public art was commissioned by Gwen Boyle and was presented to the neighborhood in November of 2005. The 63 large “interactive” beads of the Abacus can be turned, touched & moved along its steel rods. These large green stones were carded out of jade by Okanagan sculptor Deborah Wilson. The reason this green jade was used was due to the stones special significance within the traditional Chinese belief system. Jade is looked at as conducive to good health & luck. The invention of the Abacus in Asia was used long before computers, calculators & cash registers.
